Devotional Day 54

Peter was called by Jesus to become a fisher of men. He witnessed the miracles of Jesus first hand. He was given special glimpses of our Lord that others were not given. Despite daily contact with Jesus, he did not always understand Jesus’ teaching and denied him three times. Peter could be described as a violent man, cowardly, impetuous, stubborn, and unschooled.

And yet this unlikely candidate led a religious revolution. After Jesus’ crucifixion, he impressed the religious leaders of the day with his confidence and his Spirit-controlled personality. He ministered for more than 30 years and traveled extensively. He became an accomplished public speaker and an author. In short, this man, with all his faults and personality quirks, became an outstanding and effective communicator of the gospel.

How often do we use our own faults and weaknesses as an excuse to not witness to the power of the gospel? At times, we not only feel we are incapable of boldly being Jesus’ hands and feet, but we are also burdened with guilt from our past. Peter wept bitterly after realizing he had denied our Christ. But he persevered and overcame to become a man that understood that “Jesus is the Christ.”
